The Rise of SaaS-based Products

SaaS (Software as a Service) products have grown in popularity due to the fact that they can be implemented quickly, scaled as employees are added, easily kept up-to-date, and costs are predictable. Implementation for SaaS products is generally an easy process that includes informing employees of the new app they should download, employees downloading the app, and your company or your software provider answering any questions your employees might have about using the app. New employees can be informed during the onboarding process of the apps they should download on their mobile devices. If the app is free to download, then your company won’t need to pay anything extra as your employee count grows. Employees on your team will always have the most up-to-date version of the software on their mobile phones at no cost to you because of automatic software updates. Your company will know up-front what the costs of using the software are, so you will be able to know your incremental costs of adding employees, if there are any.

Reduce Costs by Adding WiFi

Instead of purchasing mobile devices and data plans for your employees, a less expensive option is to add WiFi to your locations and allow your employees to use their own mobile devices. This can also have another positive effect on your company. Since your employees will be using “their own” mobile devices, they will be more familiar with them and should be able to work faster and more efficiently. If you are going to allow and encourage your employees to use their own mobile devices at work, then you should make sure your company’s policies are clear about how personal mobile devices should be used at work. For the opposite situation of employees working when they are off the clock, some applications have built-in geofencing features to make sure that employees are not doing work activities in the app when they aren’t in the store.

What if an employee doesn’t want to go mobile or doesn’t have their own mobile device?

Sometimes employees aren’t familiar with technology or don’t feel mobile devices will help them in their jobs. For these employees, more training might be required in order to get them onboard with using mobile devices at work. Demonstrating the value of using the app at work and getting others to talk about how the apps make their lives easier can help to encourage these employees who are on the fence with using mobile devices at work. Making it a requirement for everyone to use certain applications at work can help them see how important they are to your company. For employees who do not currently have their own mobile devices, your company can either have company-owned devices they can use while at work or have a program to offer reimbursement for purchasing their own mobile devices.
